May 20-24: More Bad Press for Boeing, Ethereum Gets an ETF, and JP Morgan Still Bearish
1
Boeing was shaken by negative press again this week when a Singapore airlines passenger died on a 777 Flight. The flight was hit by severe turbulence that resulted in at least 71 people in the hospital and one death. Also, NASA ordered yet another delay for the test flight of Boeing’s Starliner Aircraft, this time because of a helium leak in the plane’s propulsion system. These are only the latest in a long list of headlines about the esteemed aircraft manufacturer’s fall from grace.
The June 2024 issue of The Socionomist takes a deep look at why Boeing’s reliability and reputation are suddenly losing altitude.

All eyes were on Ethereum this week as the SEC ruled whether or not to approve an Ethereum ETF. Prices surged 23% leading up to the decision and “Analysts attributed the move to stalling retail sales data.” Here’s what our Crypto Pro Service told subscribers on May 18 – before the big move:
“Watching to see if ETH can trade aggressively above 3146.98 as evidence for the onset of wave 3.”
EWI founder and CEO Robert Prechter says wave threes are “wonders to behold.”You can see why in this chart. We’ll see if Ethereum has further to go, or if a short-term top is in, but the answer is in the waves.

A recent MarketWatch article suggested that only one bear remains on Wall St. – JP Morgan. Its stock, ticker JPM, traded above $200 for the first time ever. So, why the long face? CEO Jamie Dimon recently warned investors of a number of concerns he sees on a global scale, stating, “I’m cautiously pessimistic. I look at the world situation and I’m quite cautious.”
In February, Dimon dumped $150 million in JPM – his first-ever sale. Our March Financial Forecast noted, “insiders sell shares for a number of reasons, but one of them is not because they expect their stock to keep rising.”

May 13-17: GameStop, Corn Selloff, and The Fed
1
Meme stocks are making a comeback this week as Gamestop jumped almost 120% before trading was halted on the popular stock. Enthusiasts seem to think that a 300% rally is coming. But Elliott Wave International’s Steve Hochberg had this to say:
“Gamestop’s May 17th $30 and $34 calls traded more than 30,000 contracts each according to Bloomberg. The original meme stock frenzy [in 2021] fizzled out in 11 trading days… The current mania echo is likely to be shorter and should disappear with the market.”

Corn Futures saw a massive sell-off this week due to planting weather condition concerns dropping prices down to 458. Earlier this month, Jim Martens, Elliott Wave Internationals Chief Commodity analyst, had told subscribers to expect a bearish decline in corn prices to continue deeper and that is exactly what has played out. The question is, will corn prices continue on this bearish path?

On Tuesday, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said that “it may take longer than expected” for high interest rates to lower inflation. He also stated that a Rate hike is unlikely.
Murray Gunn, EWI’s Head of Global Research, hosted a webinar earlier this month showing attendees a chart explaining why the FED’s actions have no bearing on the markets are doing. It only follows after the fact.
