You know the expression, "You never see the bullet that kills you"? Well, in late August, this saying aptly applied to the mainstream financial analysis surrounding soybeans, when it was "taken out" by a sharp and sudden downturn. Here's a brief recap...

Commodities: "Simple" Elliott Does The Trick
Even basic Elliott wave analysis can put you miles ahead of other traders. Today's focus: lean hog futures
By Vadim Pokhlebkin

Vadim Pokhlebkin: Jeffrey, I don't think I'm alone in saying that whatever the problem, I prefer simple solutions. Now, you use Elliott wave analysis on commodities every day, and I've seen you make it both simple and complex. Which approach do you think is more effective? -- Jeffrey Kennedy: It depends. When the chart picture is not easy to recognize as any specific Elliott wave pattern, it forces you to "make it complicated" by using additional technical analysis tools. But let's look at a very recent example...

Over the past month, much of North America has been hit by triple-digit temperatures and record-high humidity. And, according to EWI's chief commodity analyst Jeffrey Kennedy, a major "heat dome" is also about to set in over the world's commodities. And in his brand-new Monthly Futures Junctures, Jeffrey shows you where -- and how soon -- the thermometer of opportunity may reach a boiling point in these and other commodities:

May-June is not summer, nor is it spring. It's the unofficial "fifth" season, known to many as "Wedding" season. And, after months of will-she, won't-she speculation, the date has finally been set: The commodity sector will walk down the aisle to meet her long-awaited groom. The question is -- Will he take the diamond ring out of his nose (i.e., Bull) or from his paw (i.e., Bear)?

Lately, the financial media has followed around the commodities sector like paparazzi pursues celebrities, tweeting: "OMG! Sugar soars to 30-year high," and "Grain Prices Busted: Corn caught with other crop supply!" In fact, paparazzis do have something in common with the mainstream financial observers: They also focus on the "external" factors. Elliott wave analysis, on the other hand, doesn't look at the externals.

Over the past few weeks, several of the biggest "supernovas" in the commodity universe have turned into falling meteors. To wit: From their respective February peaks, the alleged "grain king," wheat, has plunged 12% while the food forerunner, sugar, has soured to a near two-month low. Here's your chance to find an answer to the question, "Is this reversal just a brief detour on the way to higher highs?"

You don't have to squint to see them. Watch commodity market charts long enough and they'll appear soon enough: those patterns on a chart when prices first swing wide up and down, then less so, then the swings narrow even more… Then, for a time, it seems the market is stuck going sideways, until – boom! – Prices launch into a wild spike that takes it far, far, and away. Triangles. That's what Elliotticians call those contracting swings in the charts.

Commodities are physical assets with finite quantities, so it follows that such markets can conceivably react to news of supply disruptions, adverse weather, and the like. However, save for an irreversible crisis, these responses are temporary at best. When it comes to deciding the LONG-TERM trends in commodities, fundamentals fall shorter than a pygmy in the NBA playoffs.

This Sunday, June 20, is Father's Day, the holiday also known as "Garish Gift Day." So, instead of giving dear ole' dad that hundredth silk neck tie or singing fish wall mount, try this on for size: The gift of opportunity in the world's leading commodity markets.
The brand-new, June 2010 Monthly Futures Junctures (MFJ, for short) has just been released. And in it, EWI's chief commodity analyst and Futures Junctures Service editor Jeffrey Kennedy reveals what's in store for these (and more) recognizable names:

Lately, lean hog prices have gone from hot roast -- to -- cold cuts. As I write, the market is hovering near its lowest level in five weeks. The thing that really stokes the fire, though, is the fact that hogs' recent slide is the exact opposite of what the mainstream experts predicted for the meat back in late April. At the time, lean hog prices were orbiting the lunar regions of a 15-year high with a fundamental backdrop that overflowed with bullishness.

Fundamental analysis of market behavior suggests a linear, "straight-line," relationship between the news and markets: Factor “X” causes market “Y” to move in direction “Z.” In reality, however, there are more switchbacks along the mainstream financial road than an Alpine ski run.
