A few weeks ago, I attended Peter Brandt's Traders Boot Camp in Colorado Springs. I saw this as a great opportunity because I've been an investor all of my adult life, and started to do shorter-term trading about four years ago.

I'd heard a lot about Peter and his Boot Camp from others, and so I decided to see if I could gain some first-hand wisdom to apply to my trading. Here's my brief story about the event.

Peter genuinely loves what he does, and he wants to help other people succeed. After 30+ years of trading, he says he still can't think of a better career. You can imagine the knowledge he's acquired about markets and trading over the years, and he's obviously enthusiastic about sharing with the group -- even the bad trades and mistakes he had made. Peter helps you realize that mistakes are part of trading and that everyone makes them. His goal is to equip students to avoid the most common trading pitfalls.

Helping students understand risk management is another one of Peter's passions. He spells out the trading process and how to control your emotions along the way. According to Peter, your method for getting into a position is not the most important element of trading. He makes students look at their risk in a whole new way -- one that they had never used -- to keep them from the trap of a drawdown that causes irreparable damage.

My fellow attendees came from a variety of backgrounds and attended for lots of reasons. Some were career traders already, others aspired to be. Some had traded for 20-plus years; some had been doing it not much longer than 20 months. Some were involved in hedge funds; others worked for proprietary trading firms; some used a system to manage money. A few wanted to improve their management of personal or family funds. One was looking for a new challenge.

What amazed me most was to see how committed Peter is to each one of his students -- to know their trading styles, plus their individual strengths and weaknesses. He communicated with them before the event to ensure that each one made the most of their Boot Camp experience. He likewise talked with each attendee during the event, answering questions they had regarding their personal style. Peter even was available after the event to help us follow through on our new plan.

Here is how a few of the attendees described the event:

"Expect to learn more about risk management than you will find anywhere in the public domain." -- Pete W.

"Talking to Peter and attending Boot Camp have fundamentally changed my understanding of investing and trading. Peter provided a framework about which I plan to construct my future trading plan." -- Tom O.

"Peter detailed the risk components and described the trading process in great detail. It will cut your learning curve by years." -- Paul H.

But I thought this quote summed it up best: "It's such a rare and real deal to have a hugely successful trader to share the fundamentals to trading, to be honest about every aspect of his real trading, and to be dedicated to helping people succeed!"

The Elliott Wave Principle is a detailed description of how financial markets behave. The description reveals that mass psychology swings from pessimism to optimism and back in a natural sequence, creating specific Elliott wave patterns in price movements. Each pattern has implications regarding the position of the market within its overall progression, past, present and future. The purpose of Elliott Wave International’s market-oriented publications is to outline the progress of markets in terms of the Wave Principle and to educate interested parties in the successful application of the Wave Principle. While a course of conduct regarding investments can be formulated from such application of the Wave Principle, at no time will Elliott Wave International make specific recommendations for any specific person, and at no time may a reader, caller or viewer be justified in inferring that any such advice is intended. Investing carries risk of losses, and trading futures or options is especially risky because these instruments are highly leveraged, and traders can lose more than their initial margin funds. Information provided by Elliott Wave International is expressed in good faith, but it is not guaranteed. The market service that never makes mistakes does not exist. Long-term success trading or investing in the markets demands recognition of the fact that error and uncertainty are part of any effort to assess future probabilities. Please ask your broker or your advisor to explain all risks to you before making any trading and investing decisions.
