Here is an excerpt from an actual email my forex broker sent me this week:

"Due to the extreme volatility some market analysts foresee could result in the coming days, [we] will not accept any trading activity from 6:00 AM EST until approximately 3:00 PM EST, on Sunday, June 17, 2012. [We believe] the convergence of a major market event during off-market hours represents a potential trading risk..."

My first question was -- was the end of the world announced for this weekend, and I missed it? Then it hit me: Greece is holding another election! Some are calling the Sunday Greek elections "a referendum on the euro." And the fears are that Greece's vote may send shock waves throughout the eurozone and the financial world.

You may be surprised, but in highly emotional moments like these, Elliott wave pattern in market price charts get particularly clear. Wave patterns reflect the market player's collective psychology, and the more tense the market mood gets, the bigger the signal it sends. (Remember the "flash crash"? Textbook internal Elliott wave pattern.)

This is the latest EUR/USD chart our forex-focused Currency Specialty Service is showing to subscribers right now (some Elliott wave labels erased for this article):

As you can see, over the past couple of days EUR/USD has built a pretty clear 5-wave rally pattern. And if you know even the basics of Elliott, you know that after every 5-wave move comes a correction. How deep, how fast?

The Elliott Wave Principle is a detailed description of how financial markets behave. The description reveals that mass psychology swings from pessimism to optimism and back in a natural sequence, creating specific Elliott wave patterns in price movements. Each pattern has implications regarding the position of the market within its overall progression, past, present and future. The purpose of Elliott Wave International’s market-oriented publications is to outline the progress of markets in terms of the Wave Principle and to educate interested parties in the successful application of the Wave Principle. While a course of conduct regarding investments can be formulated from such application of the Wave Principle, at no time will Elliott Wave International make specific recommendations for any specific person, and at no time may a reader, caller or viewer be justified in inferring that any such advice is intended. Investing carries risk of losses, and trading futures or options is especially risky because these instruments are highly leveraged, and traders can lose more than their initial margin funds. Information provided by Elliott Wave International is expressed in good faith, but it is not guaranteed. The market service that never makes mistakes does not exist. Long-term success trading or investing in the markets demands recognition of the fact that error and uncertainty are part of any effort to assess future probabilities. Please ask your broker or your advisor to explain all risks to you before making any trading and investing decisions.
