Phi Day can be celebrated on two days, either June 18 or August 14. The first date numerically represents the golden ratio itself, 0.618. The second date falls proportionally at 0.618 of the way from January 1 to December 31. (Here's the math: 0.618 of 365 days = 225. 57 days. There are 212 days in the first seven months of the year, which leaves 13.57 or, rounding up, 14 more days, which takes us to August 14.)

The ratio that governs Elliott waves, architecture and spirals, to name a few, is so deeply satisfying aesthetically and intellectually that it almost deserves to have two dates to celebrate it. It takes a certain dedication to appreciate all the ramifications of phi (pronounced "fie"). But that may be exactly why it's difficult to promote Phi Day to the masses. With so many fascinating meanings and relationships, it's hard to pick one as a motif, unlike Pi Day (3-14), which comes ready-made with its own dessert – pie in all its lovely forms.

Nor does it produce a memorable phrase, such as "Avast, me hearties!" That phrase comes from my favorite "made-up" event, called "Talk Like a Pirate Day." How did it come into being? Two guys, John Baur and Mark Summers, who liked to sit around talking like pirates to one another decided to promote the idea that everyone should do the same thing at least once a year. So they picked September 19 as the day and set up a web site with its own primer on how to sound piratical.

Which leads me to the reason for this article – we need some help from our "phi-nancially" savvy readers to help us come up with a schtick that will make Phi Day stick in the minds of millions.

It's not as if we haven't tried to come up with some ideas. Here are a few tossed out by fellow EWI staff members:

  • We could plant phicus trees on Phi Day.
  • Or we could eat phiber. (Not nearly as much fun as eating pie on Pi Day.)
  • Or we could name our favorite phi-star restaurants and hotels.
  • Or start a Phife and Drum Corps. If we really get a big group, well then ... rank and phile!
  • That's it, we can hand out nail philes.
  • We should put someone in charge, who was born in Philadelphia
  • We could start a Phight Club.
So, you can see that we've tried, but we're still looking for that brilliant idea that "phires" people up and makes all the other "phine" ideas pale in comparison. If you have an idea to help put Phi Day on the calendar, then write us. Put "Phi Day" in the subject line, and send your email to customerservice@elliottwave.com
